“Gulliver is on the right. That’s where your peers are drinking Revo, listening to music, and filming TikToks,” — with these words, our tour of the "Pryamyi" TV channel began. Our guide was Vitalii Zakharov — PhD in Philology, a lecturer with 18 years of experience in TV journalism and media production.
The team of participants from the media festival “Press Spring on the Dnieper Slopes”, future journalists of the ITA YUNPRESS at the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth, had the chance to visit one of the most professional studios in the country. We were given a unique opportunity to peek behind the scenes of television and find answers to all our questions.
Our journey took us from an editing room equipped with powerful hardware and dual-monitor workstations to the news studio — a space filled with spotlights, teleprompters, and “peekers.” This is where the life of live broadcasting pulses, with the image lagging behind reality by only 4–5 seconds.
With a smile, the journalists showed us the lounge area, jokingly called “the place where people lie around to avoid working.” Everything around us breathed the reality of the profession — intense, dynamic, and captivating not only in its results but also in the process itself.
Our final stop was the PCR — the production control room, where the structure of the broadcast is born. It is here, among monitors and audio consoles, that decisions are made about which shot the viewer will see and which emotion will take center stage in a minute of live broadcasting.
This day showed us that journalism is not just about words and cameras, but also about technology, strategy, teamwork, and a love for the truth. And as Mr. Zakharov said: "The most important thing is not to stay silent, because journalism begins with the desire to speak."
